The next step is to complete up to four years in a graduate program at a university that has a dent al school or any other institution that has been accredited by the American Dental Association. On top of that you will also have to complete at least two years of advanced education in an ADA accredited orthodontics residency program. There is a lot of hard work involved, including knowledge of behavioral, biomedical and basic sciences. As an orthodontic resident you would be learning all the skills it takes to manage the movement of teeth, known as orthodontics. You will also learn about the guiding of facial development, known as dentofacial orthopedics.

Once you have finished your schooling you will be able to open your own practice and of course the better your skills and the more clients you have will determine your overall income. The nice thing about all that hard work is the salary you will be able to obtain after completion of these tasks. A person coming out of school with their degree in orthodontics can start with a salary in the upper 5 figures. Fortunately, with this career path you can advance your salary with the more years you have under your belt. Once you have been in practice for a while your income will more than likely rise and you can bump up to making a 6 figure income. A lot of people see the road to becoming an orthodontist a hard one but in the end it can pay off very well.
